Credit for Prior Learning

Blue Mountain Community College acknowledges that students learn in many different ways and through a variety of experiences, both in and outside of the classroom; therefore, has approved the following options for students to receive college credit for prior learning in the following areas: Institutional Challenge Exams and other forms of assessment, Military Credit, Portfolio, and Credit for Prior Certification. This procedure is in accordance with Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities standard 2.C.7 and State of Oregon, Higher Education Coordinating Commission’s Credit for Prior Learning standards.

Institutional Challenge, Exams and Other Forms of Assessment

  • AP: Advanced PlacementCredits will be awarded based on the scores received from Advanced Placement program of the College Board. AP test scores must be dated within three (3) years of the date the exam was completed. Scores must be sent directly to BMCC from the College Board.  See BMCC's AP Credit chart for credits offered by exam type and minimum score.
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student: Have exam scores sent to BMCC from the College Board. 
      • BMCC: Once exam scores are received BMCC will send letter to student notifying them of credits student is eligible to apply for.
  • CH: Credit-by-Exam (Institutional Challenge) - Credit will be awarded based on the scores received from a comprehensive examination or series of examinations. Not all courses are eligible for CH. A list of eligible courses will be listed in the Academic catalog each year, online, and can be obtained from the Office of Instruction.
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Contact BMCC's Office of Instruction for list of subjects that offer this option. 
        • If option is available, pay for exam at Service Center.  Exam must be taken the term and year payment is made.  Fee is non-refundable.
      • BMCC:
        • Coordinate with student and instructor for date and time of exam.
        • Final grade sent to Registrar's office. Student will be notified at time course is added to official transcript.
  • CLEP: College-Level Examination Program - Credits will be awarded based on the official CLEP scores received from the College-Level Examination Program of the College Board. CLEP test scores must be dated within three (3) years of the exam completion date. The BMCC course number, title, and the number of credits awarded will be based on BMCC’s approved CLEP credit chart.
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Have exam scores sent to BMCC from the College Board. 
        • After notification from BMCC, pay for eligible credits
      • BMCC:
        • Send letter to student notifying them of credits student is eligible to apply for.
        • After payment is made by student, credits will be posted to students official transcript and notification is made to student.
  • CPL: DPSST Training (DPSST training for criminal justice program) - Credits will be awarded for specific courses based on the DPSST training received during or after 2002 or employment in the criminal justice field for a minimum of three years. The BMCC course number, title, and the number of credits awarded will be based on BMCC’s approved DPSST credit chart.
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Complete form and contact BMCC's Criminal Justice Department Chair, Rebecca Blaine, for DPSST transcript review.
        • If approved for credit, make payment at BMCC Service Center
      • BMCC:
        • Transcribe credit as approved by Criminal Justice Department Chair.
        • Notify student of credits posted to official transcript.
  • CPL: EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) - Credits will be awarded for EMT151 and EMT152.  To qualify, the student must be enrolled in a minimum of (1) BMCC credit during the term in which the request is made.
    • How to apply for credit:
      • Student:
        • Complete EMT CPL Request form, attach appropriate documentation and fee of $20. Forms, documentation and payment may be mailed or delivered to any BMCC location.
        • Students with coursework from another college:  Please be sure to use our TES (Transfer Evaluation System) tool to ensure that your coursework is considered equivalent to BMCC's EMT151 and EMT152 courses.  
          • If you do not find your school and or prior coursework listed, please be sure to have your other college transcripts evaluated for course equivalency prior to submitting your EMT CPL Request form. To request that your other college credits be evaluated you will need to:
            • Have your official transcripts sent to the college (BMCC only accepts credits from other regionally accredited colleges); AND
            • Complete our Transfer Credit Evaluation Request
      • BMCC:
        • Verify enrollment and documentation provided. 
        • Transcribe credit for EMT151 and EMT152,
        • Notify student of credits posted to official transcript.

Military Credit

No cost to transcribe credits

  • MIL: Military - Credits will be awarded based on American Council of Education guidelines for evaluation of military training. The BMCC course number, title, and number of credits awarded will be determined by the Records Office and the appropriate instructional departments.
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Have official military (JST or SMART) transcript sent or made available to to BMCC.
      • BMCC:
        • Credits will be evaluated towards students degree intent at BMCC.
        • Student will be notified of accepted credits

Credit for Prior Certification

  • CPL: Early Childhood Education - Credits will be awarded to students who have obtained the Child Development Associate Credential or Step 7 of the Oregon Registry for Childhood Care and Education. The BMCC course number, title, and the number of credits awarded will be based on BMCC’s approved ECE credit chart.
    • How to apply for credit:
      • Student:
        • Complete form and contact BMCC's Early Childhood Education Department Chair, Dawn Kennison-Kerrigan, for review of prior certification documents.
        • If approved for credit, make payment at BMCC Service Center.
      • BMCC:
        • Transcribe credit as approved by Early Childhood Education Department Chair.
        • Notify student of credits posted to official transcript. 
  • CPL: Apprenticeship - Credits will be awarded for a valid (not expired) Journeyman’s JBAC card. The BMCC course number, title, and the number of credits awarded will be based on BMCC’s approved APR course. 
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Provide copy of valid JBAC card to BMCC's Registrar.
        • If approved for credit, make payment at BMCC Service Center.
      • BMCC:
        • Transcribe credit 
        • Notify student of credits posted to official transcript. 
  • CPL: National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) - Credits will be awarded for completion at the silver, gold or platinum level. NCRC certificate must be dated within three years of the exam completion date. Credit will be granted for RD120.  Students must be sure to have their scores marked as "share with employers".  Guide to having Workkeys scores accessible by college.  
    • How to apply for credit: 
      • Student:
        • Have official scores made accessible to BMCC (see instructions listed above)
        • Complete and return NCRC Credit for Prior Certification form
        • Pay for credits (RD120).
      • BMCC:
        • Transcribe credit
        • Notify student of credits posted to official transcript. 

Portfolio

Note:  Currently, BMCC does not offer this option. 

  • EL: Portfolio (Experiential Learning) - Credits will be awarded for specific courses based on the recommendation of the faculty assessment of the students completed portfolio.
