BMCC wins 2012 finale in dramatic fashion

The Blue Mountain Community College softball team couldn’t have ended the season in much more dramatic fashion than it did with a 3-2 last-inning victory over treasure Valley Community College on Sophomore Day on May 12.

And, appropriately, it was a trio of sophomores leading the way.

With one out in the bottom of the 7th, Megan McIntyre singled, moved to second on a sac bunt by Page Woodward and moved to third on a TVCC  error. Kostner then followed with a 1-2 pitch for a single and game-winning run. All three are sophomores.

BMCC was down 2-0 until the 4th when Cheyenne Friend singled, moved to second on Jordan Bennett's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kendal Weber's single.

In the 6th, Friend tied it with her team-high 8th home run of the season. That made it 2-2 and set the stage for the bottom of the 7th walk-off win.

"It was softball the way softball is supposed to be played," said coach Tom Mauldin. "I loved it, the team loved it, everyone loved it. What a great way to end the season and what a great comeback after being shut down in the first game.”

Mauldin said the game featured the long ball, the short game and timely defensive plays.

“The two key bunts (Bennett’s and Woodward’s) show how big the bunt is in fastpitch,” said Mauldin. “They got the bunts down and moved their teammates into scoring position. That’s the difference in the game.”

Bennett scattered five hits and both of TVCC's runs came on walks in the second inning. In earning her eighth win of the season, Bennett struck out eight. She walked seven, including five in the first when TVCC scored its two runs.

Friend and Kostner each had two hits in the game.

In the first game, TVCC's Tara Hutchinson allowed only a single to Weber in the 5th inning. She had a perfect game until Weber singled with two out in the 5th. Hutchinson struck out 11 and walked none.

By winning their final game of the campaign, the T-Wolves finished at 13-25 ... an improvement over 2011's 4-36 record. In East Region play of the NWAACC, BMCC finished 7-21 to finish 6th, ahead of Yakima and Columbia Basin. In 2011, BMCC won just two region games.

In between games, BMCC honored sophomores Weber, Bennett, McIntyre, Megan Alexander, Kostner and Woodward.

After the game, BMCC presented team honors to: Friend (Most Outstanding Hitter), Kostner (Top Defensive Player), Bennett (Team Captain), Kerica Cusick (Most Improved) and co-Top Pitcher awards to Bennett and Alexander. More on season-ending awards when statistics are finalized.
