Post Date:05/07/2019 10:42 AM

The public is invited to an opening reception May 13 for the annual Blue Mountain Community College Student Art Show that will highlight the work of BMCC students in a variety of mediums. The opening reception runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Betty Feves Memorial Art Gallery in Pioneer Hall on the Pendleton campus, is free, family-friendly and open to the public. Light refreshments are provided.

The annual Student Art Show highlights the work of art students at BMCC, and includes a variety of two- and three-dimensional pieces, including drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. Awards are given for Best of Show, 1st-3rd place, and Honorable Mention by this year’s judge, Whitney Minthorn. Minthorn is a multi-media artist, working in printmaking, beadwork and photography. He has worked and exhibited internationally, and was a featured artist during the Portland2016 Biennial. He is also co-owner of Moe Pho’s Noodles & Café in downtown Pendleton, and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Minthorn studied painting at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as fashion and textiles at Cambridge Regional College in England, and holds a certificate in photography and digital manipulation from Oregon College of Art and Craft.

In addition to the Judge’s Awards, the public can submit a vote for the Heather Gastin Memorial People’s Choice Award. The winner will be announced on May 28.

The Student Art Show runs May 13-30. The Feves Gallery is open Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and by appointment by calling 541-278-5952. Visitors can also see the exhibit during the College Community Theatre production of “Private Lives”, as the Gallery will be open 30 minutes prior to the start of each night’s performance and during intermission (May 10-12 and May 16-19).

The Student Art Show is the final show of the 2018-19 academic year for the Feves Gallery, which will close for the summer term. The first show of the 2019-20 year will open Sept. 26.

The Betty Feves Memorial Art Gallery at BMCC is a non-profit exhibit space connecting emerging and established artists and their work with students, staff and the general public in Eastern Oregon. The Gallery is located in Pioneer Hall on the Pendleton campus of BMCC, 2411 NW Carden Ave.
