SMITH AWARDED HOWARD CHERRY AWARD FOR
OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADVOCATE
BMCC President John Turner announced that Oregon Representative Greg Smith, Heppner, will receive the 2010 Howard Cherry Award for ‘Outstanding Community College Advocate’ at the Oregon Community College Association Convention on November 5, 2010.
Turner characterized Smith by saying, "Greg Smith, like Howard Cherry, has been a tireless advocate for education and his work to help us secure funding to educate and train students from this region is to be commended."
Smith’s nomination lauded his work on the Joint Ways and Means Committee and on its Education Sub-Committee, and his work with Small Business Development programs in Regions 12 and 13.
The Howard Cherry award is the highest honor bestowed by the Oregon Community College Association each year. The late Dr. Howard L. Cherry, an orthopedic surgeon and Oregon Legislator, was an extremely strong supporter of education until his passing in 1990.
