A grand opening event unveiling a state-of-the-art computer technology lab was held at the Cay-Uma-Wa Education Center on Tuesday, January 20. According to BMCC/CTUIR Education Liaison Lindsey X. Watchman, upgrading the technology in the 12-station lab was a joint project between CTUIR and Blue Mountain Community College with funding from Wildhorse Foundation, CTUIR Dept. of Education and BMCC Title III. The hardware and software were installed by the CTUIR Office of Information and Technology.
Bruce Kauss, BMCC distance education specialist, demonstrated how CTUIR members or Nixyáawii students can take inter-active distance education classes via Elluminate Live! using the cameras and speaker systems at each station, while watching the class session a full-sized projector screen.
CTUIR Adult Basic Education Coordinator Susan Ely thanked BMCC for sending a GED instructor to conduct classes at Cay-Uma-Wa twice a week and told how the lab helps support those students.
Watchman talked about the number of people who can benefit from the lab like students in summer school, Nixyáawii students doing homework assignments and community members researching topics of interest. Three of the computers will be loaded with special language software to support the tribal language program. The computer lab is open from 7:30a.m.-4:00p.m every week day.
